Ian Thompson was formerly Reader in Landscape Architecture at Newcastle University, where he remains a Visiting Fellow. Before taking up an academic post in 1992, he was a practising landscape architect and worked on three of the British national garden festivals: Glasgow in 1988, Gateshead in 1990 and Ebbw Vale in 1992. His PhD research into value systems in landscape architecture became the book Ecology, Community and Delight (1999). He is also the author of The Sun King’s Garden (2006), The English Lakes. A History (2010) and Landscape Architecture. A Very Short Introduction (2014).
