David Watkin was Professor of the History of Architecture at the University of Cambridge and, as a world-leading authority, the author of some thirty books, predominantly on the history of classical architecture and landscape from the eighteenth century to the present day. In 2004 he published The Architect King: George III and the Culture of the Enlightenment, from which the chapter in the present book has been abstracted by Clive Aslet. David Watkin died in 2018.
