Elisabeth Mansén

Elisabeth Mansén is Professor Emerita in the History of Ideas at Stockholm University. She specialises in Swedish cultural history, particularly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Her studies also covered philosophy, comparative literature, art history, medicine and theology. Her PhD dissertation was entitled Konsten att förgylla vardagen: Thekla Knös och romantikens Uppsala (1993). Her research on spa culture was published as Ett paradis på jorden: om den svenska kurortskulturen 1680–1880 (2001) and a condensed version is available in English as ‘An Image of Paradise. Swedish Spas in the 18th Century’ (1998). She wrote Sveriges historia 1721–1830 (2011) and other topics of particular interest include Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart Mill, Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde and Virginia Woolf. Her latest book, published in 2022, is a new edition of Mary Wollstonecraft’s travel letters from 1795.
