Karl Schlögel, born in 1948, studied philosophy, sociology, Eastern European history and Slavonic studies at the Freie Universität Berlin, at the Lomonossow University in Moskow, and at the Russian Academy of Sciences (Institute for Russian History) in Leningrad (St. Petersburg). Until 2013 he was Professor of Eastern European History at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt am Oder. He was awarded the 2016 Preis des Historischen Kollegs for Terror und Traum (Hanser, 2008). Last published by Hanser: Der Duft der Imperien (2020), translated into nine languages.
