Michael S. Gazzaniga is the director of the Sage Center for the Study of Mind at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received a PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1964/65, where he worked with Roger Sperry, and had primary responsibility for initiating human split-brain research. He has carried out extensive studies on both sub-human primate and human behavior and cognition. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience and also a founder of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society. For 20 years he directed the Summer Institute in Cognitive Neuroscience and serves as editor-in-chief of the major reference text The Cognitive Neurosciences (2009). He was a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics 2001–09. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science, the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.
