Alfred Döblin

He left Berlin in late September 1924 to research his Jewish roots in Poland, completing his journey in late November that year. The trip was triggered by anti-Semitic riots in Berlin’s Scheunenviertel district and was a deeply personal reckoning with Judaism. Döblin’s book Journey to Poland was published in Berlin in 1926.
