Ali Ansari is a Professor of Modern History and founding director of the Institute of Iranian Studies at the University of St Andrews. His research interests include Iranian historiography, nationalism and British-Iranian relations. His publications include Modern Iran Since 1921: the Pahlavis and After (Longman, 2003); Confronting Iran: The Failure of American Foreign Policy and the Roots of Mistrust (C Hurst & Co, 2006); and The Politics of Nationalism in Modern Iran (Cambridge University Press, 2012). Additionally, Professor Ansari has written for the Spectator and the New Statesman, among other publications. Professor Ansari holds a BA from University College London, an MA from King’s College London and a PhD from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. He is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, and is Honorary Vice-President of the Governing Council of the British Institute of Persian Studies.
