Franz Kratter (1758–1837) was born in Bavaria. After his studies in Vienna, he visited Lemberg for the first time in 1784 as a travel writer. Despite the dire conditions he encountered there, he decided to stay on – and worked as a civil servant with the Imperial and Royal Kosher Meat Tax Administration.
