Gérard Colas obtained a Ph.D. at Sorbonne-Nouvelle (Paris) for a thesis devoted to architecture techniques in selected Sanskrit texts. He then received a D. Litt. for a thesis on the Sanskrit Vaikhānasa corpus of temple rituals (ca. tenth century). Initially aspecialist for Indian manuscripts at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, he was then hired at the Centre national de la Recherche Scientifique, where he is now Emeritus Directeur de recherche. In addition to Vaiṣṇavism and architecture, his publications concern Hindu doctrines, manuscriptology, and eighteenth-century Christian works inSanskrit and Telugu.
