Herbert Butterfield (1900–1979) was a British historian and Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge.
He is best known for The Whig Interpretation of History (1931), which denunciates the teleological aspects of the ‘Whig’ approach to history. He received thirteen honorary degrees, one of which was a DLitt from Cambridge in 1974.
