Joseph Roth (1894–1939), the son of Jewish parents, was born in the east Galician city of Brody, where he attended the German upper secondary school. In 1913, he enrolled at Lviv University to pursue Germanic studies and philosophy, and in 1914 continued his studies in Vienna before ending up in Berlin. As a writer, he was one of the most important chroniclers of Jewish lives and communities in Europe before they were ultimately destroyed. In 1933, Joseph Roth emigrated to Paris, where he later died.
