Lord Acton (1834–1902) was a liberal historian, politician, and philosopher of resistance to the state. He was Regius Professor of Modern History at University of Cambridge, where he taught two courses of lectures on the French Revolution and on Modern History. In 1869, he was raised to the peerage by Queen Victoria.
