Nils Billing

Nils Billing is professor of the History of Religions at the Department of Theology, Uppsala University, Sweden. He earned a PhD in Egyptology in 2003 with the doctoral thesis Nut: the Goddess of Life in Text and Iconography. In 2013 Billing earned his second PhD, this time in the history of religions. In the thesis The Performative Structure – Ritualizing the Pyramid of Pepy I he discloses the editorial strategies involved in providing a corpus of religious and cultic texts to the wall of a royal Egyptian tomb from c. 2300 BCE. He has also authored three monographs in Swedish, most recently Unis pyramid: död och förvandling i en fornegyptisk kungagrav (2023). He is currently working on a project aiming at the full publication of a large collection of mummy bandages, mainly dating to the Ptolemaic period and inscribed with the Book of the Dead, kept at the Uppsala University Museum.
